Car Salesman Stacks Evo, Kills Passenger

File this one under “senseless, preventable tragedy”: a Pennsylvania man was killed, and his son badly injured, when they car they were in lost control and hit an embankment. At the wheel was Michael Hershey, a car salesman who wanted to show off the handling capabilities of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution his dealership was selling. It turns out that Hershey had been drinking prior to the accident, and also tested positive for marijuana use. A blood test showed a BAC of .06, below the .08 level for impairment in Pennsylvania, but still more than is advisable for demonstrating the handling limits of a car to potential buyers. Read more…

Mitsubishi To Focus On EVs, Kill Off Evo

Where, I wonder, did Mitsubishi go wrong as an automaker? The brand that once had such promise has fallen on hard times, and finds themselves forced to create a new global identity. Instead of focusing on performance and racing (a natural, since the three-diamond brand dominated both Paris Dakar and WRC for years), Mitsubishi is trying to be a kinder, gentler car company. Jumping on the Green bandwagon, their new focus will be on establishing themselves as an “environmentally sensitive” automaker. To that end, Mitsubishi will launch eight new EV or hybrid vehicles by 2015, with their primary focus being the reduction of CO2 emissions from their vehicles. Read more…

2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution SE Review & Test Drive

‘A MORE DISCREET AND LESS EXPENSIVE RALLY RACER FOR THE STREET’
The all-new Limited Edition 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution SE (Special Edition) combines the best of the GSR and MR while saving you more than $3,000.00 off the price for a comparable MR model. The all-new SE slots nicely between the GSR and MR, and like the new MR, loses the high rear wing in favor of a more discreet rear lip spoiler for downforce enhancement.
The all-new EVO SE features the signature EVO MR ‘shark nose’ front fascia, HID headlamps, foglamps, large side airdams, aggressively styled sloping aluminum hood with air scoop and heat extractors, side fenders with heat extractors, deep lower side extensions, boxed fenders, a working rear air diffuser with dual, 4in. wide polished aluminum exhaust tips, and special SE badging on the lower right trunk panel. New York Auto Show 2009: Mitsubishi Outlander GT heading for production
Mitsubishi made it official, the Outlander GT Protoype revealed at the New York Auto Show will go into production with these changes: a higher ride height to match the typical Outlander, more power for the V6, but you’ll lose the vented discs and Brembos. The polished aluminum roof on this GT is a beautiful addition, but only for the show, and that’s a shame. You will be rewarded with the upgraded interior, which also stays for production. Price for the more powerful V6 model with S-AWC is expected to be about $30,000, nicely equipped. And yes, you can expect the new Lancer nose to make its way throughout the rest of the Outlander line.
NEW YORK, April 9, 2009 – Mitsubishi Motors pulled the wraps off its Outlander GT Prototype today, providing clear directional clues into the next generation of the popular Mitsubishi Outlander CUV. The Outlander GT Prototype is loaded with new technology, greater performance, higher fuel efficiency and an aggressive new design. The world debut occurred at the annual New York International Auto Show.

Mitsubishi ASX compact CUV set for 2010 Geneva Motor Show premiere
Last month we told you a new compact crossover is on its way from Mitsubishi that will be called the RVR when it goes on sale in Japan. Today the Tri-Star automaker announced that the little CUV will wear the ASX badge in Europe and make its official debut at the upcoming 2010 Geneva Motor Show in early March. We’ve been told the RVR/ASX will eventually make it to American shores, but whether or not it gets yet another name is up to Mitsubishi.
In Europe, the ASX will be offered with a wide array of engines including a 1.8-liter diesel that can be combined with a six-speed manual transmission and what Mitsubishi is calling “Automatic Stop & Go,” which we assume is their label for stop/start technology. Considering the CUV’s small size and presumably light weight, that combo should yield impressive results at European pumps.

First Drive: 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR Touring
Listen here, sonny, that ex-rally racer known as Evo is all grown up. It goes by MR Touring now, but you’ll know that the minute you see it. That ridiculous wing? Gone. A subtle, age-appropriate lip spoiler takes its place so there’s no more guessing about the cop pacing behind. Inside, the Recaro racing seats are now lined in leather — and heated to boot. A full color LCD now rests between the gauges and not only delivers more information (because of higher resolution), it’s easier on the eyes. They’ve even put a powered sunroof in the thing – first time ever for any Evolution.
So this MR Touring definitely looks more mellow and certainly has additional creature comforts, but does this mean the mighty Evolution has gone soft? Limp even?
Not one bit.

First Drive: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT is a CUV we can live with
Mitsubishi presented its best and brightest rides for us to drive over the course of an eight-hour event in the parched desert oasis of Palm Springs, CA. Everything from a tuned, 290-hp Lancer Sportback Ralliart to an electric i MiEV. And drive them we did. We rocketed up winding mountain roads and down gravel-caked trails. If they brought it, we pounded on it. Fairly hard, too. Odd then that the focus of this particular review – and in many ways the star of the party – isn’t some carbon fiber body kit-enhanced EVO X, but rather the new 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT.
Yup, an SUV. Actually, a CUV, albeit one with lots of ground clearance. Mitsubishi first introduced the second generation Outlander in 2006 (replacing the more wagon-esque first gen.), and 2010 marks a major refresh. In GT trim, almost everything has changed, from the exterior to the interior to the quantity and quality of gadgets to the engine output to the transmission and finally, most importantly, its all-wheel-drive system. The 2009 Outlander was a fine, competent, utilitarian machine – perfectly adequate for schlepping kids and groceries. But let’s be frank, it didn’t set hearts on fire. And while the new Outlander GT won’t necessarily do that either, it’s most definitely not just another sedan on stilts.
