Mazda, Honda Suspend Dealer Orders

Want a Mazda 3? Buy it soon… Image: Mazda

The economic effects of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami will begin to hit U.S. auto dealerships in April and May. Last week, both Mazda and Honda temporarily suspended U.S. dealership orders for all vehicles built in Japan. For Mazda, this includes the Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 5, MX-5, RX-8, CX-7 and CX-9; for Honda, the vehicles impacted include the Fit, CR-V, Insight, CR-Z, Civic Hybrid, Acura TSX and Acura RL. Nissan will reduce U.S. vehicle allocation for May by 50%, while neither Toyota nor Mitsubishi have announced any changes to dealer ordering procedures. Neither Mazda nor Honda will speculate on when orders will resume, but it’s reasonable to expect inventory shortages of popular models heading into the summer months. Read more…

2011 Honda Element Review

Overview
While the Honda Element may seem like just another boxcar clone, the element entered the American market well before Kia, Scion, and Nissan models. The Element has distinctive styling; it comes with a bigger body, one powertrain offering, and All-Wheel-Drive.
The attributes that make the Element different from the rest include the visually-appealing interior, clamshell-cargo doors, and its well-appointed cabin. It’s sold with a 2.4 L inline-four engine, and it is a bit bigger than the vehicle it replaces in this segment. The Element is an SUV alternative and is not necessarily ideal as an urban drive about.

If you love the outdoors the Element may appeal to your tastes. Basic niceties include stain-resistant carpetin Read more…

Honda bringing Odyssey minivan concept to 2010 Chicago Auto Show

With apologies to Get Shorty and the 1995 Oldsmobile Sillhouette, the Honda Odyssey may well be the Cadillac of minivans. Honda’s big, luxurious people hauler has been the hottest-selling minivan in the U.S. over the past two years, besting Chrysler and Toyota for the minivan sales title. With the success of the Odyssey over the past couple of years, it’s almost hard to believe that Honda is already looking forward to a redesign, but the present model has been on the market since 2005 with only nominal tweaking, and there’s a bold new Sienna to contend with from its crosstown rivals, too.

To that end, Honda has announced that they will unveil a new concept version of the Honda Odyssey at next month’s Chicago Auto Show, showing what the engineering-focused company’s fourth-generation minivan will look like. Honda promises that the next Odyssey “will further enhance its hallmark qualities of innovation, quality, safety and fun-to-drive character, while increasing its overall efficiency.”

Chicago Auto Show 2010: Honda Odyssey Concept gives clear glimpse of next-gen minivan

Honda just unveiled a concept version of its next-generation Oddity Odyssey minivan at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, and it was one of those rare instances where the media was actually seeing it for the first time, as God intended unveilings to be. Although billed as a concept, the 2011 Honda Odyssey Concept looks almost production ready… other than its door handles, lights and a few other details.

While the current third-generation van is the best selling minivan in America two years running, Honda decided not to play it safe with the redesign. The all-new fourth-generation Odyssey is a big departure for Honda. It’s lower and wider, taking an almost Mercedes R-Class stance. Although they claim it’s only one inch lower and 1.4 inches wider, it looked like a lot more than that. The 2011 Odyssey also features a “lightning bolt” lower greenhouse border that reminded us of the Nissan Quest a bit. Honda says it helps with rearward visibility.

Detroit Auto Show 2010: Honda CR-Z promises to bring driving joy to the hybrid equation

After a few weeks worth of leaked images and brochure fluff, Honda has finally pulled the covers off its next new production hybrid hatchback. The Japanese automaker claims the CR-Z will bring back the kind of driving joy that hasn’t been felt since the CRX last left dealer lots in 1991, saying that owners will embrace this new mild hybrid with both their hearts and minds. We certainly hope they’re right.

While we’re really digging the looks of the CR-Z and the way it hearkens back to the classic CRX and even the original Insight hybrid, we’ve gotta admit that we’re a tad bit disappointed with the specifications. With 122 horsepower on tap and just 128 lb-ft of torque from the 1.5-liter VTEC four-cylinder with Integrated Motor Assist, shouldn’t we expect more than 36 miles per gallon in the city and 38 on the highway from the CR-Z?

LA Auto Show 2009: Honda P-NUT concept gets cracked open

Turns out that the Honda P-NUT is not some sort of twist on the UX-3 unicycle thing we saw in Tokyo recently. Instead, the concept vehicle is a three-seat thing enclosed in lots of glass and angular lines. Honda says the P-NUT is ready for one of three possible powertrains: an efficient gas engine, a gas-electric hybrid, or a pure electric set up. There’s not a whole lot of room for any of these powerplants up front because the driver’s leg room extends almost all the way to the front of the concept. Good thing the power source is intended to be mounted in the rear.

Let’s be clear, this is a pure concept car. There are no side mirrors (but there is a back-up camera). Bumpers? Bah, Honda barely put headlights on this thing. Still, the Honda ‘Personal-Neo Urban Transport’ could make for a pretty sweet ride through a city, with lots of sight lines for the three inhabitants (a driver in the front middle, two passengers arranged behind and to either side) to see out of. The P-NUT does succeed in Honda’s stated goal to get the most space out of a small footprint, and we wouldn’t mind some sort of production version BEV someday. Chances are, though, that this is the last we’ll ever see of it.
