Isuzu Japan Plans To Buy GM Medium Duty Trucks Division

Japanese truck maker Isuzu Motors might buy General Motors (GM) medium-duty truck division, according to Japan’s Kyodo news agency today. Be the first time a manufacturer takes a business in Japan a major U.S. motor carriers.

According to the Nikkei business daily, GM contacted Isuzu in mid-September to gauge the interest of the Japanese firm to buy its medium-duty truck unit. Sources close to the negotiations said that Isuzu would consider the proposal positively, so that both companies are expected to shortly begin formal negotiations to conclude an agreement later this year.

Although the agreement still must be realized, it is estimated that the transaction would be valued at tens of billions of yen. Within the trucking industry, GM’s global sales are at the fifteenth position, and Isuzu is the second largest company in Japan. Produces about 270,000 units annually, although its business area is concentrated in Southeast Asia and small trucks.

The acquisition of medium-duty truck unit of GM Isuzu expand production by 60% to the year and would exceed 110,000 units and Hino Motors, the largest truck manufacturer in Japan. In addition, Isuzu would rise to the post 8 of 12 of the world list of manufacturers, also surpassing Toyota, which ranks tenth. Read more…

2009 New York Auto Show Preview: 2010 GMC Terrain prepares to polarize

While GMC’s new-for-2010 Terrain crossover may be all but identical to Chevrolet’s Equinox, one look at this bluff-faced polarizing design will tell you that badge-engineering wasn’t part of the program at General Motors. Yes, both vehicles share the same platform, the same engine choices and even the same suspension calibrations, but the in-your-face look here is likely to inspire love-it-or-hate-it reactions. We’ll let you decide on which side of the fence you sit, with one caveat: It is often the case that certain cars look better in the metal than on screen or in photographs. We were invited to GM’s Design Dome for a media backgrounder, and after being in-and-around the vehicle, we profess that we can’t make the same case.

First Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is angular, unhinged glory

We’ve already discussed the complete, audacious beauty that is the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe. Not only is it one of the most attractive designs to come out of General Motors in decades, but it’s arguably one of the best-looking vehicles on the road today, proving that Cadillac (and GM, for that matter) is once again capable of delivering world-class designs.

Sexy? Yes. But can she cook?

We don’t have many complaints about the 304-horsepower, direct-injection 3.6-liter V6 found under the hood of the standard Coupe. It certainly means well and does a good enough job of keeping the CTS experience entertaining, but we’d be liars if we didn’t say we’d rather have a powerplant with a few more stones – 252 more, to be exact.

Cruze Comes To Town: Chevy unveils 40-mpg Eco model and RS package

hevrolet will use the 2010 New York Auto Show to reveal a few more details about the production Cruze sedan going on sale this fall. Specifically, the Big Apple is where Chevy will formally unveil the high-mileage Cruze Eco model and RS trim package (inset). The Chevrolet Cruze Eco is propelled by the new turbocharged 1.4-liter Ecotec inline four-cylinder. This engine, combined with a six-speed manual transmission, is not only the most powerful unit available, it’s also expected to yield a hybrid-like 40 miles per gallon on the highway. In order to help achieve that lofty number, the Cruze Eco gets drag-reducing shutters that close off the lower grille at higher speeds. Also contributing to the car’s elevated fuel efficiency are a deep front air dam and under-body panels. The 1.4 turbo is rated at 138 horsepower and a healthy 148 pound-feet of torque.

Like other Chevy models, the Cruze will also be offered in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. The LS gets a 136-horsepower naturally-aspirated 1.8-liter four, while the two higher trims get the turbo. Drivers wishing for a sportier appearance can opt for the RS package, which adds foglamps, rocker panel extensions and a rear spoiler. The RS pack also brings an upgraded interior featuring chrome trim and backlit instrument cluster bezels.2011 Chevrolet Cruze ecoPricing and official EPA fuel Read more…

New York 2010 Live:Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon is fantasy writ large

The world’s automakers are introducing around 20 new vehicles this week at the 2010 New York Auto Show. Some of those cars are pretty interesting, but here’s the juice: In 20 years, there is exactly one car being shown here today that people will still be whispering about. That car? The Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon. You’re reading this correctly. Cadillac, former maker of landau-roofed Boca Rotan retirement sleds will soon be offering a station wagon stuffed with a 556-horsepower, supercharged and Corvette-derived 6.2-liter V8. If that’s not loony enough for you, yes, you can order it with a six-speed manual. Wowza.

We first glimpsed the V Wagon last night at a fairly gala Cadillac cocktail reception, complete with GM design boss Ed Welburn and none other than Maximum Bob Lutz, the man who may have single handedly willed pistonhead fantasy into production. The CTS-V Sport Wagon took center stage flanked on either side by the plain old CTS-V and our Detroit Show favorite CTS-V Coupe. To put the spectacle in photographic terms, even though it was surrounded by some pretty desirable metal, the newest V managed to “pop.”

GM to show Chevy Orlando-based GMC Granite and hi-po Buick Regal in Detroit Auto Show 2010

It seems as though it’s just about impossible to keep an embargo in place these days. A Canadian outlet just spilled the beans on a couple of GM reveals set for Detroit next month. They say they were invited to a sneak preview Wednesday evening and although they couldn’t take pics, they felt free to tell us about the whole array of models. Some have been loosely-guarded secrets, but a couple are unknowns, so we’ll quote CanadianDriver on those until we get confirmation from GM.

Apparently, The General will have a slew of new model introductions in the D next month, including the much-anticipated Camaro Convertible, the new, upsized Aveo, a substantially-revised Malibu, production versions of the Spark and Orlando, and two models we hadn’t heard about until now: A GMC version of the Orlando dubbed the Granite, and a “sport version of the Buick Regal” that should get “many of its performance parts from the 325-hp Opel Insignia OPC.” Hot dog, the Regal GS is apparently more than a wet dream. Bring on the Stage 1 and GNX.
