BMW’s M135i Concept Bows Before Geneva Debut

BMW’s M135i hot hatch. Image: BMW AG

BMW’s M Performance line was announced last month, and so far the sub-brand’s focus has been on turbodiesels. That changes with the Geneva debut of the M135i hatchback concept, which, for the record, we want very, very badly to see in the United States. We’re fans of the hatchback, and we question the automakers’ assumption that “Americans won’t buy hatchbacks.” We say they will, especially when they come packaged as nicely as the M135i. Read more…

Alex Roy Explains How To Beat Speed Traps: Video

Alex Roy and his 2000 BMW E39 M5

Unless you’re a true gear head, it’s entirely possible that you’ve never heard of Alex Roy. He isn’t a Formula 1 star, he hasn’t beaten Sebastian Loeb in a stage of the World Rally Championship and (as far as we know) he’s never turned a faster lap around Talladega than Jeff Gordon. He’s not a movie star, either, but Roy does has a taste for flamboyant costumes and over-the-top theatrics. The man knows a thing or two about driving fast, as well.

Roy is a multi-year Gumball 3000 and Bullrun participant, and holds the (unofficial) transcontinental speed record from New York to Los Angeles, a run Roy and co-driver David Maher made in 31 hours and 4 minutes. He also set a (now beaten) record for a lap of Manhattan, making the trip in 27 minutes with speeds as high as 144 miles per hour.

While Roy has seen his share of police stops, he’s also managed to make a career around avoiding them. In other words, when Alex Roy speaks about avoiding speed traps, it may benefit you greatly to pay attention. That said, we don’t advocate equipping a car with laser jammers (illegal in many jurisdictions), and we’d be the first to point out that public roads aren’t the place to test your driving skills.

Below is the first of a multi-part series where Roy gives advice on avoiding detection. While a lot of what he discusses is common sense, it’s still worth the time to watch the video, and we can’t wait to hear what he has to say on upcoming segments.

2013 BMW 3-Series Review

The next 3 is internally known as the F30 and will of course retain rear-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive; an array of diesel and gasoline engines will again be available. But downsizing is the rage, and while there will still be an inline-six, the majority of 3-series models will be powered by turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The M3 may lose its V-8 and return to a six-cylinder engine, which is likely to be turbocharged. On the other side of the spectrum, BMW could even add a three-cylinder engine, but that would be unlikely to reach the U.S. market. The four- and six-cylinder diesel engines will be highly efficient, some versions of which could even trump the current 320d EfficientDynamics Edition, which gets an astonishing 53 mpg in the European cycle. If we see a diesel 3 again in America, though, you can bet it won’t have one of the puny engines. Read more…
