2012 Audi A7

2012 Audi A7

The silhouette of the 2012 Audi A7 is slim, more like the Jaguar XF as any of the other four-door coupe. From the rear roofline give the stretching and glass of the 2012 Audi A7 is a retro look, like some of the hatchback sports car of the 1950s.

Europeans share this hook. Germans think we are ridiculous for the election of the VW Jetta sedan (seen here as an old man from the car) on the more practical Golf hatch. Europeans such as tailgates. So it is not surprising that a German car company Audi, whose latest offering, the A7, is perhaps the best chance yet the image of the tailgate is in the U.S. to reform. Why the 2012 Audi A7 could succeed where cars like the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo and the Honda Accord Crosstour failed? In one word: style.

The 2012 Audi A7 interior is very nice, framed the instrument panel wrapping around the driver and the front doors, the dashboard perfectly complemented by the beautiful three-spoke sports steering wheel.

The 2012 Audi A7 is a four-seater car. There are acceptable legroom in the rear seats. The 60/40 rear seat folds down to a flat bottom and open the rear for transport of goods that rivals a station wagon, available under the fifth door liftback. It is super quiet underway.

We love the Google Earth navigation screen in the 2012 Audi A7, a beautiful map to follow, makes for a great pop-up screen. As for the navigation system itself, the good news is that it allows you to set a goal, while the car is in motion, but we found the precision is missing.

Audi Prices The 2012 R8 GT

Image: Audi

If you’ve always wanted an R8 with just a bit more schnell, you’d best get in touch with your Audi dealer, pronto. Audi’s announced pricing on their new 560 horsepower, V10 R8 GT, and only 90 will be brought into the United States. The price of admission starts at $196,800, but that amount of cash buys you some impressive performance. Zero to sixty two miles per hour (or 100 kph) comes up in a mere 3.6 seconds, and the top speed is said to be 199 miles per hour (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). Extensive use of carbon fiber has shaved some 180 pounds from the car when compared to an Audi A8 5.2 quattro coupe. Read more…

MTM Tuned R8 Biturbo: Dark Glasses Not Included

Image: MTM

Don’t even think about buying this one-off, uber-tuned R8 from MTM unless you own some serious sunglasses. In fact, welders goggles wouldn’t be out of the question, especially on sunny days. The exterior, you see, was stripped of paint before the bare aluminum was polished to a mirror-like sheen, a process that took some 700 hours to complete. Put that into perspective for a second: if you were working at home in your garage, killing two hours of spare time per day, that finish would take you nearly a year to duplicate (at which time you’d probably have to start all over again to remove the oxidation). As cool as it is, that’s not what the MTM R8 Biturbo is really about. Read more…

Audi’s A8 L Security: Mr. Bond, Your Limo Is Here

Audi A8 L Security

Image: Audi USA

Do you have a lot of money, a lot of power and a significant number of enemies? Are you tired of rolling in the same armored BMW 7 series that every other Wall Street executive gets delivered to the office in? Want to try something new, but with a similar German pedigree? Good news, then, since Audi has recently announced their A8 L Security armored limousine. A bullet and bomb resistant version of the full sized A8 L, the car comes with an array of standard and optional features that would impress even Bond, James Bond.

First there’s the armoring, which meets or exceeds VR 7 standards for bullet resistance and was further tested for explosion resistance. I’m not sure what that means exactly, but I wouldn’t worry about being shot up by an AR15, AK-47 or M1A assault rifle. You can laugh at any handguns, but I wouldn’t want to be in the car if someone let loose with a Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifle. As for roadside bombs, you’re probably safe in North America and Audi claims the A8 L Security will withstand an attack from a military hand grenade.

It takes an additional 450 hours to armor the A8 L Security, and Audi’s stats are pretty impressive. The doors, for example, weigh nearly 200 pounds apiece, and that’s not including the bulletproof glass (which adds nearly 670 pounds, including the windshield and rear window). The armor used in the interior weighs nearly 1,600 pounds; despite this, the A8 L Security is the lightest vehicle in its class. As you may have guessed, it takes a big motor to haul this kind of car around, so Audi chose to drop in their 6.3 liter, W12 engine, good for 500 horsepower and 461 ft lb of torque. It’ll get the car from zero to sixty in under 7.3 seconds and has a top speed (limited by tires) of 130 miles per hour. All things considered, fuel economy isn’t bad, with Audi estimating that the A8 L Security will get 17.4 MPG on the highway. Read more…

First Test: 2009 Audi A6 3.0T quattro Sedan

Try splitting a market segment. That is, encapsulate the positives of both ends with none of the negatives. The Audi A6 does it deftly, bridging the space between the midsize Audi A4 and full-size Audi A8. Naturally, it shares engines with both, a 3.2L V-6 and a 4.2L V-8. But for 2009, it receives something in between: Audi’s new supercharged 3.0L V-6.

Underhood the 2009 Audi A6 3.0T, the supercharger provides 11.6psi maximum boost to produce 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Max torque is available from 2500 rpm to 5100 rpm, where max horsepower starts and stays until the 6800 rpm redline. The result is eyebrow-raising acceleration as you pull the six-speed automatic’s paddle shifters and watch as the digital speedometer slot-machines into triple digits. And that seat-of-the-pants sensation translates to the hard data: Acceleration to 60 mph takes 5.4 sec, just a tenth off the pace of the outgoing Nissan 350Z Track. Sure, the Z reaches the quarter-mile mark a little over a tenth faster, but this A6 is an inconspicuous, all-wheel-drive, 4139-lb sedan.
